HISTORY OF THE VALAIS BLACKNOSE SHEEP

Valais Blacknose (Walliser Schwarznasenschaf or Nez Noir du Valais) is a breed of domesticated sheep originating in the upper Valais region of Switzerland, first registered as a breed in 1962. Valais Blacknose is a mountain breed well adapted to grazing on the stony pastures of the Valais region of Switzerland. The canton of Valais is one of 26 within Switzerland and it is in the south west part of the country. It is widely known for the Matterhorn and the famous resort towns of Zermatt and Verbier.

Valais Blacknose ewes and rams are both horned and can reach considerable weights of 70-90kg and 80-130kg respectively. They are a dual-purpose breed, reared for both meat and wool (best suited for felting and carpets) and they require shearing bi-annually. The fleece has a fluffy appearance adding to the ‘cuddly toy’ appeal of the animals and the black parts of the nose, eyes, ears, front knees, ankles, hocks and feet are the only markings within the white fleece.

They are large, striking looking sheep who are exceptionally friendly with very peaceful yet inquisitive natures.  They are known for lambing easily and are able to produce rapidly growing lambs year-round.

Valais Blacknose sheep are growing in popularity across the UK and the rest of the world. First imported into the UK in 2014, as a naturally docile and affectionate breed who crave attention, they make perfect pets.
